July Book of the Month: Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon

You must read this smart, tragic, humorous story!

Julia: Funny, smart, and strangely moving, I absolutely loved this book! Set in ancient Syracuse, but written with a modern Irish Street wit, it follows two washed-up poetry loving potters, who decide to stage a Greek tragedy, using prisoners of war, (held in a local quarry) as actors. It shouldn’t work, but it totally does. The dialogue crackles, the characters are rough but loveable, and underneath all the laughs, there’s real heart and thought about war, art and friendship.

Annie: Two Syracusian potters put on a play during the Peloponnesian War starring Athenian invaders-turned-prisoners. A Monty Python vibe, told in a contemporary Irish voice, it is both tragic and humorous.

Sally: Is this the love child of Madeleine Miller and Kevin Barry? Friends Lampo and Gelon enter unchartered waters when they decide to stage Medea with defeated and dying Athenian prisoners. Lennon’s characters become radiant as the hearts and minds of conquered and conqueror meet. Strangely moving indeed.
