Daughters of the Bamboo Grove by Barbara Demick

Daughters of the Bamboo Grove: From China to America, A True Story of Abduction, Adoption and Separated Twins.

A tour de force, in writing and reporting. As part of China’s one-child policy, a baby girl is brutally taken from her mother, adopted by a family in Texas; a twin sister is left behind.

The author is also part of the story, in a Didion-esque way, discovering the girl in Texas, knowing the backstory, but unable to say anything for years, eventually helping to reunite the family.

“Entrancing and disturbing,’ says the New York Times. “Demick’s characters are richly drawn, and her stories . . .deliver a rare emotional wallop. . . .will inspire strong feelings.”
