Every Wild Soul is a beautifully crafted tale set against the wild and remote Maria Island, written by Tasmanian biologist and celebrated author, Katherine Johnson. It weaves themes of survival, secrets and the healing power of nature into a compelling narrative that will resonate deeply with fans of Where the Crawdads Sing and The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.
The judges of The Australian Fiction prize described the work as ‘a beautifully atmospheric, absorbing and tender novel’, agreeing ‘without a doubt, this cinematic tale is a deserving recipient of the inaugural prize’.
A breathtakingly beautiful and gripping exploration of humanity’s connection to the wild – and the hope that can be born from even the darkest of times – Every Wild Soul is an absorbing and evocative exploration of resilience, rewilding and healing, a story with nature and courage at its heart.
Drawing on her extensive background as a trained biologist and science writer, Katherine brings striking authenticity to these environmental themes. The narrative is also deeply shaped by her own life. After enduring pregnancy loss and her husband’s cancer diagnosis, Katherine experienced firsthand the healing power of nature. She channeled this deeply personal journey into her writing to demonstrate that people are remarkably resilient when they reconnect with the earth. The novel highlights the urgent relevance of current environmental issues while offering a steadfast message of hope and courage.
