PARIS – A LUXURY LITERARY TOUR
8 JUNE – 15 JUNE 2020
Spend a fabulous week exploring the literary world of Paris with veteran journalist and author Alan Riding. Along with contributions from three of his writer friends, Alan will be shining a light on a city that has always revered journals, essays, plays, novels – and all who put pen to paper.
Little wonder that generations of authors have crossed the world to seek inspiration – and freedom – in the City of Light: where else could James Joyce’s Ulysses or Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer have escaped the censorship of their native lands?
We will look back at French literature across the centuries, from the playwrights of the Golden Age and the philosophers of the Enlightenment through 19th-century giants like Stendhal, Balzac, Flaubert, Hugo and Zola to 20th-century masters like Proust, Cocteau, Céline and Camus.
Talks by our literary experts will give context to these giants of the past and introduce us to contemporary French fiction. Each day, we will visit where these luminaries lived, loved and worked before they were eventually enshrined as statues and laid to rest alongside their peers. And, as our tours and visits will reveal, many of the secrets of the City of Light are to be found in its shadows.
